Bass Line Failures to Expect
Braid against rock and timber
Braid wins on diameter and sensitivity, and loses on abrasion. In published sandpaper testing it gave up far more of its rated strength than mono did. If you fish jigs or Texas rigs around rock, check the last few feet after every fish.
Line that breaks in the same place twice
On a baitcaster, a backlash leaves a kink. That kink becomes the weak point, and the line snaps there on the next hookset. Cut above the kink and retie rather than trusting a straightened section.
Under-gunning heavy cover
An 8 lb line handles open water bass all day. Sitting in matted grass or around dock pilings it does not, because the fish wraps the line before you can turn it. Step up to 15-20 lb braid when the fish has somewhere to go.
Key Considerations
- Clarity: bass are highly line-shy in clear water. Add a fluorocarbon leader of 8-12 lb to braid and keep it short.
- Abrasion: treat rock, shell beds and docks as line-eaters. Mono survives better than braid on the same structure.
- Hooksets: braid's low stretch drives a hook home through grass. In open water it also tears hooks out of soft mouths, so set the drag accordingly.
Seasonal Patterns
- Spring (spawn): shallow and cover-heavy. Braid 15-20 lb with a short fluoro leader.
- Summer: deep weed edges and offshore structure. Braid main line, fluoro leader for clear-water fish.
- Fall: schooling fish in open water. Lighter fluoro 10-12 lb gets more bites.
- Winter: slow finesse presentations. Light fluorocarbon on spinning tackle.
